Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny must serve a two-match ban after the Football Association dismissed an appeal against the red card given against Newcastle.
The centre-back, 25, was sent off late on for holding back Magpies striker Nile Ranger in Sunday's 1-0 defeat.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger felt it was "not only harsh, but not right".
But the club's appeal was rejected on Tuesday, and he must serve a two-match ban as it was his second dismissal of the season.
Koscielny's challenge on Ranger took place about 35 yards out near the touchline on Arsenal's left and Wenger believed fellow central defender Sebastien Squillaci was in a position to cover.
Frenchman Koscielny, who is of Polish descent, signed from Lorient in the summer, was also sent off at Liverpool on his Arsenal debut.
